The Dogo Argentino originated in 1928 in the province of Córdoba, in the central region of the Republic of Argentina by Dr. Antonio Martinez. He created the Dogo primarily for hunting large game such as peccaries, wild boar and pumas.
Dr. Martinez crossbred several purebreds with the Old Fighting Dog of Cordoba, a dog which was very strong and vigorous. To this dog he added, Great Dane, Pointer, Bull Terrier, Boxer, Bulldog, Pyrenean Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound and Spanish Mastiff. These combinations produced the first family of Dogo Argentinos, displaying strength, tenacity, sharp sense of smell and bravery.
The Dogo was recognized by the by the FCA (Federación Cinologica Argentina) and received full AKC Recognition in January 2020.
The Dogo is a large white short-coated dog with a muscular and strong body that rarely has any markings. Its standard weight is usually between 80 – 120 lbs. Dogo’s are very active dogs, and need to be exercised regularly.
The Dogo is a very smart and loyal dog and is a very trainable dog. The Dogo is a great loving and family dog. They love affection and being petted. It's amazing how loving the Dogo can be and then watching them catch dangerous game. The Dogo makes a strong bond with its family and will give its life for them.
The Dogo is a great watchdog. They are fearless. We are working with some trainers now, and we like what we are seeing. The Dogo is capable of protection work. These Dogo will rise to any challenge.
The Dogo was bred for catching large wild game. The Dogo has great strength and stamina. These dogs are made to display power and catch dangerous game. They are meant to be good pack hunters and do so well.
